Review: Canabalt

Yeah I know, another iPhone game review. Have I no shame?

Canabalt is another iPhone game with simple, casual gameplay. There is really one objective here – jump and run your way across rooftops as long as you can without slipping up and falling. The game features these incredible pixel-based graphics with a post-apocalyptic theme. A lot have people have described it as “8-bit” but that’s not really accurate. It has a monochrome color style to it, with pretty detailed environments while the character you control is much more simplified. In most games, I wouldn’t be mentioning this much about graphics. But this game is different. This visuals add a very nice feel to what is a very simple game concept.

Screenshots don't do the visuals of this game justice.

Enough about the visuals though. The actual gameplay of Canabalt is also very solid. It’s noticeably fluid and making your nameless runner jump out of windows and hit the roof rolling while pieces of shattered glass surround his landing is just cool. There’s also cool little things like the giant walking machines in the background and birds that fly away as you pass them – awwww hell. I got carried away on the visuals again, sorry. While you are enjoying your morning rooftop jog, you will probably come across obstacles like boxes and chairs. Hitting them doesn’t end your workout for the day, but rather slows you down which can lead to an inevitable pavement dive if you can’t get the speed to make that one jump.

This is a great addition to any iPhone. The music and visuals both compliment the gameplay wonderfully, and the game is pretty damn addicting. A recipe for an awesome game.

If you are going to get any game from the app store, pick up this one first. It’s that good.
