Review: Epic Pet Wars

Epic Pet Wars is an online game for the iPhone that’s a little like Pokemon – you adopt a pet, and then have it battle against other people’s pets online in order to gain experience and eventually level up.

Basically, if you’ve ever played any of those very deep (cough) online mafia games, you’ve played this game. It’s the same thing re-skinned, though I will admit that the art is pretty nice and the app itself works well.

First you get to adopt your own pet and name it. There are plenty of pets to choose from and the devs are constantly adding more, though if you want to be able to adopt a certain pet chances are you’ll be paying a couple of bucks for it. Yep, this game features everyone’s favorite kind of dealing – micro-transactions! Aside from pets you can also buy respect points which let you buy special items in the game to further your pet’s abilities.

So after you create your pet, the grinding begins! You get experience from doing missions (nothing exciting, just push a button and you get XP and lose energy) and by battling other players. That’s it! That’s the whole effing game. No variety whatsoever. You might buy new armor/weapons here and there but they’re purely for stat bonuses and have no cosmetic affect at all.

The game is fun at first, and then the grind realization kicks in. And that’s also when you realize you just blew five bucks on a virtual frog among his other cute friends. I give it a “meh,” because while the game itself has been done many times, the app is nice and the art is good and appealing. Not really “recommended” but the app is free and is fun for the first couple of days so it’s your call. Just please don’t sell your soul and buy a virtual frog like I did. Emotionally, it was quite scarring.
