Review: Zombie Wonderland

Zombie Wonderland is the latest offering from iPhone game devs Chillingo. These are the guys who brought you such iPhone classics like Minigore and Guerilla Bob. The same visual style applies here too, and the game looks pretty good. My only complaint for visuals is the lack of blood, which feels odd for a zombie game. There’s no gibbing or head explodies here, unfortunately.

ZW2 The game itself plays like a micro-management title like Diner Dash or Cake Mania. It’s not really a shooter, you do shoot zombies but there’s more to worry about then that. In each level, you will need to defend yourself from a wave of zombies from within a building (house, bar, garage, etc). Zombies approach from all sides and you’ll have to shoot at them with your shotgun from the open windows. Early in the game you will get wood planks which can be used to board up individual windows, and later a turret that can be placed to mow down zombies for you. While this is all great, zombies will eventually make their way through your defenses and come for you. Killing them inside your quarters will leave nasty green zombie guts which need to be mopped up ASAP – you heard me right. Your brains are your second priority here.

The game itself is good and throws around some cool concepts, but unfortunately the game gets stale quickly. Some more weapon variety would fix this, but there is barely any. This is a little sad as this is a promising title.

Overall, this app isn’t half bad. It just needs a more in-depth upgrade system, much like I’ve come to expect from micro-management titles. Some zombie gibbing would be nice, too.
