Weekly Update 07/06/2010

I should probably note that this is my last week of school until exams start next week! Feeling pretty good about that, exams… not so much.

In the News

Without a doubt one of the biggest announcements made recently was Apple’s iPhone 4, which is going to feature multitasking (finally), FaceTime (video chat right on your phone), and new Retina display technology which Apple describes as “…the sharpest, most vibrant, highest-resolution phone screen ever, with four times the pixel count of previous iPhone models.” Hot damn! Also, on the gaming-related front there’s a Gyroscope in there too, which only adds to the functionality of games on the device.

Also, part two of Frozen Crossing, a very well done Modern Warfare 2 fanfilm is here and it’s pretty awesome. The slow-mo breach scene – you know, like in MW2’s campaign – is so cool to watch when done in film like this. Check it out here.

Now Playing

I’ve been feeling some lust for a good MMO lately, mainly LOTRO. All this talk about it going F2P makes me really want to play it again. Alas, it’s nearing finals week(s) and I’m trying to keep my gaming time down and make studying my new favorite hobby. It’s not working out so well, as you can probably imagine. That being said, the next two months after exams will definitely be spent in a much less productive way.

->Battlefield Bad Company 2

Just recently got back into this one. I never really touched it for a while after release, even though I liked it so much. Instead, I cheated on my FPS of choice and went back to that vile, attention whore that is MW2 on Xbox. Fortunately though, my saturation level with MW2 is at it’s peak and I’ll definitely be playing more BFBC2 now. Feel free to add me on steam – I’m not the best player and I have some Rambo moments here and there, but if you can look past that I’d love to play with you sometime.

->Fallout 3

I finished the main story quest line on friday, and since I’ve just been doing side quests and trying to prepare for the Broken Steel DLC (which I did buy). After finishing the main story, I have to admit the game lost a lot of it’s appeal and lure for me to play it as the side quests are nowhere as enticing. Still, it’s a great game and one you should consider picking up. I’m 20 hours in and there’s still so much to see.

->Dragon Age

Out of boredom I started playing my nearly untouched copy of the game on friday. Still trying to figure out the tactical pausing and micromanagement aspect of the PC version that the 360 version lacked, but so far I’m liking the PC version much more.

Got more stuff coming up this week with another two reviews, one iPhone, one Xbox. See you then!

LOTRO going free to play? Uhhhhh…

f2pdwarf

I know what you’re thinking. Yet another blogger giving his thoughts on Turbine’s biggest MMO going F2P. My apologies. It has to be said.

Turbine released this bit of news to everyone very recently, and as usual I was a little late on the announcement. At first I was pretty pissed. I remembered reading rumors about it and thinking to myself, “nah, LOTRO isn’t dying like DDO was. It’ll never go F2P.”

Boy was I wrong. And pissed. I just bought all the expansions a while back and I actually was thinking of re-subscribing because of how much I enjoyed the last free weekend even they had. But, after some thinking I’m a little more okay with Turbine’s decision. It only makes sense that LOTRO would go F2P after the success of DDO’s re-launch as a F2P title a while back. I think it would be safe to assume Turbine would make more off LOTRO if it also used this revenue model too. Even so, I will miss the old LOTRO. Once a game goes free, in come the Maplefucks and Runetards who won’t pay for MMOs. It’s these kinds of people I really do not want to see in a game like this. LOTRO really does have one of the best player bases I’ve seen in an MMO, and that may or may not go down the shitter once the inevitable happens. Hopefully it won’t be that noticeable.

Still, I have signed up for the beta and I will definitely be returning to LOTRO for the beta or the relaunch. I encourage you to do the same, especially if you haven’t played LOTRO yet.

Latest WoW patch brings changes to newbie zones

As stated by these two articles, Blizzard is going to make some interesting changes to the Gnome and Troll starting zones in World of Warcraft. I know, I’m a little late on this but I just read those articles today and since then I’ve been doing all sorts of research on it.

In case you don’t play WoW or have never touched it, here is what is going down. There are 10 races in WoW currently, andGreetings from the Echo Isles! 8 starting zones. Only eight because the Gnomes share the Dwarf starting zone and the Trolls share the Orcs’. This is because the Gnomes have had their city overrun by leper gnomes and so they have been forced to evacuate. Their city, Gnomeregan, is actually an mid-level dungeon and it has been that way for a while (actually, since the game came out). The same situation applies for the Trolls, except their story is a bit more depressing. The Echo Isles just north of Sen’jin Village is full of vicious voodoo trolls and also houses the mad, twisted Troll traitor, Zalazane. Early in the Troll/Orc starting zone, you get a quest to kill Zalazane at level 10. So basically, Zalazane (a level 10-non elite) has managed to continue his reign over that island while Thrall and his other horde buddies do jack all about it up in Orgrimmar.

So hopefully in this upcoming patch, Blizzard will be changing up the two starting zones and quests. As hinted by those posts I linked, the Gnomes will finally get off their asses and do something about Gnomeregan and the Trolls will take care of Zalazane for good. This will probably also result in a Gnome city (finally!) and perhaps some sort of city for the Trolls. Because really, since 2004 all the Trolls have had is some small-ass collection of huts along the shore. Blizzard, it’s about time!

Darkfall first impressions

Note: game does not actually look this good.

Yeah, it happened. I finally caved in and bought Darkfall which has probably the most mixed opinions of any MMO ever. Some people love it, others think it is a complete pile of shit, and some are sorta in between. Well, I am here to add my humble opinion to that pile.

After dropping the fifty bucks for the game over on the site, I downloaded the client and began patching. Prevab, who also plays Darkfall (and did a review of it right here on this site) chose Alfar as his race so I pretty much had no other choice than to go Alfar too. Why? Well, Alfar are the only race in the game that have no other racial alliances. So this was the only way I would be able to play with him properly. Why he chose Alfar, I will never know. I wanted to be a wolf man, not some emo british metal-loving pansy-ass elf.

After making my character (Darkfall only allows one character per account by the way) I hopped into the world of Darkfall, not knowing what to expect. My first thought post-login was this – DAYUM this game is ugly. And it was! It’s probably because I picked Alfar so the starting zone is all dark and gritty to go with the racial “style” but damn those were some ugly textures.

I picked up the first two quests – kill 4 goblins and get 4 goblin axes – and headed out to kill some goblins. I kinda got lost along the way and ended up falling off a cliff into a very large swamp. My map said there were goblins in the swamp, so I began looking. This is where Darkfall began to get me. I was so used to being able to actually see mobs plain as day in other MMOs, but this was different. I couldn’t make out anything among the destroyed buildings and rubble the swamp contained. It felt like I was actually out hunting something. I felt like I was all alone in some swamp with goblins, with no one there to help me. Everything was silent. Then out of nowhere, I heard the sound of an arrow flying through the air and a split second later my character screamed in pain. The chase was on! From there, I ran around a corner and waited. When I came out for a look I spotted a Goblin Scout, just about to launch another arrow in my face. I ran up to him and spammed my melee attack until I saw him hit the floor. Seemed to work well enough. I gathered his possessions and went back behind cover to try and spot more goblins. This went on for a while, and eventually I had killed more goblins than necessary because of all the ones that had attacked me out of nowhere when I had been looting their friends’ stuff. I felt like I was doing really well and owning these gobbos up – until the goblins got wise and ambushed me. I had been looting more stuff and had foolishly let my guard down when three goblins (shaman, scout and fighter) began attacking me. I tried to run, but the shaman finished me off with a magic missile and I fell to the ground. When you die in Darkfall, you lose everything. Even your quest items. I ended up safely gathering four more goblin axes before handing both quests in and then logging off. Nevertheless, it was a good experience and definitely a unique one.

I like this one so far though, more then I thought I would. The world can be lacking in some areas while others seem very finished but the AI provides a very different sense of tactics that I have never before experienced in an MMO. It just felt really different. The UI is pretty good too. I’ve heard people complaining about it before, but I was comfortable with it after about 30 minutes of use.

The only problem I have with Darkfall is the fear of not having much to do in the future. It seems the PvE is generally quite dry and grindy (which is not a problem when the combat is so great) but when the whole game is about grinding skills it will become a bore for me quite quickly.

But still, Darkfall has serious appeal and I can see myself continuing to play it.

More LOTRO impressions

Just some more quick LOTRO impressions.

I decided to make another character since myself and Conor both agreed to not play our dwarf characters unless we were both online. I went with a (gasp!) hobbit hunter which completely violates my terms and agreements toward life. Okay, so I don’t really like hobbits. But it’s okay, because I just wanted to see how their starting area compares with the dwarven one, which Conor and I found to be quite bland.

Well, I’m pleased to report that Archet (and The Shire) are both like a thousand times better than the dwarven starting zone. I now feel bad that I started the game on such a “meh” attitude. I actually felt like I was playing a Lord of the Rings game this time. Seriously, I’ve never felt so attached to an area in an MMO. I was doing one of those “deliver the mail” type quests and I had to stop to enjoy the scenery. High green hills with tall trees and roaring waterfalls – damn, it felt like I had been there before in RL, like something out of a dream. It’s just so different from what I’m used to seeing in games like WoW… maybe it’s the landscape. It’s so varied and not just flat with some dips here and there.

Anyway, ending this here before I get too carried away. I had to mention this stuff though, Turbine seriously excelled at this element of design.
